Foldable phones are gaining significant traction in the market, with almost every manufacturer having a foldable model or developing one. Honor, one of these manufacturers, recently released the Magic V2, an inward folding device claimed to be the thinnest foldable phone in the market. Yet, the company doesn't intend to stop there. Rumor has it that Honor plans to unveil another foldable smartphone within this year, aiming to disrupt the market with a large-screen, lightweight, external folding design.

In a recent leak from a Weibo user, Honor's plans to release a competitively priced foldable smartphone later this year came to light. This new smartphone is expected to feature a large external folding design, keeping it light on the hand, and intended to compete in the vertical small folding smartphone market.

The company has made moves in the foldable segment previously too. They applied for a trademark for a device named “Honor Magic Fold,” potentially the new “slim, externally folding smartphone.” If the company does indeed launch this device later in the year, it will add an interesting dynamic to the competitive market landscape.

As of now, Huawei leads the external folding smartphone market with its popular Mate Xs 2. For Honor to challenge Huawei's market dominance, they need to deliver a truly compelling product. The vertical small folding segment, though still nascent, is expanding quickly. With Honor's entry into the market, the competition is bound to escalate in the near future.

The success of Honor's upcoming foldable smartphone will likely hinge on its pricing. If priced competitively, it could pose a serious threat to Huawei's Mate Xs 2. Yet, the true test lies in the comparison of their features and performance, something we will have to wait and see.
