Apple's latest iPhone 15 Pro series has brought with it a host of enhancements including a shift from the traditional stainless steel frame to a more modern titanium one, the integration of a USB-C port, and the introduction of the innovative A17 Pro chip, which utilizes TSMC’s state-of-the-art 3-nm process. However, emerging reports from multiple sources suggest that users of the iPhone 15 Pro series are grappling with significant overheating challenges.

Earlier theories speculated that the root of the problem lay with TSMC’s 3nm chips. It was believed that the challenges TSMC faced in ensuring high yields for their 3nm chips forced Apple to compromise and opt for chips of lesser quality. Contrary to this belief, renowned industry expert Ming-Chi Kuo has shared insights suggesting the overheating does not stem from the 3nm technology of TSMC. Instead, it seems the actual issues lie elsewhere.

Kuo believes that Apple’s drive to reduce the weight of the iPhone 15 Pro has compromised its thermal system design. Specifically, in their effort to produce a lighter device, Apple might have reduced the area allocated for heat dissipation. Additionally, the use of a titanium frame, as opposed to other materials, has adversely impacted the device’s thermal efficiency. For perspective, when weighed against its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro is 19 grams lighter. This weight reduction, combined with the titanium frame, could be the underlying reasons for the overheating.

Addressing this, Kuo forecasts that Apple might roll out a software update to mitigate the heating issue. Yet, this solution may come with a downside — the potential throttling of the A17 Pro chip’s performance to maintain safer temperature levels. Kuo also emphasizes that should Apple fail to address this matter effectively, it could lead to a decline in the sales figures of the iPhone 15 Pro series throughout its product life cycle. What remains puzzling is how such a significant oversight bypassed Apple's rigorous prototype testing phase.
