Apple Watch Ultra 2 teardown unveils limited internal alterations

iFixit recently conducted teardowns of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Series 9, comparing them to their direct predecessors. While not much has changed in the disassembly process, one notable improvement is the 4 percent larger battery in the Apple Watch Ultra 2. Despite earlier rumors, the Ultra 2 does not feature a microLED screen, but its display remains sharp.

The disassembly process involves removing four screws at the back to access the rear panel. The adhesive holding the Ultra 2's 1.92-inch display in place is softened using a heat gun. Notably, the battery in the Ultra 2 now boasts a capacity of 564mAh, representing a 4 percent increase over the original Apple Watch Ultra's 542mAh capacity.

The Ultra 2 also houses Apple's latest S9 SiP (System in Package), although the company claims it offers the same 36-hour runtime as the previous model. The screen is constructed from sapphire, ensuring excellent scratch resistance even when subjected to a level 8 pick from Mohs' Hardness Test Kit. The Taptic Engine remains the same in terms of size and weight as the previous year.

In the case of the Apple Watch Series 9 (41mm version), iFixit observed a smaller Taptic Engine and an even smaller 282mAh battery, which remains unchanged from the 41mm Apple Watch Series 8. One notable difference is the presence of 'spongy foam' instead of individual components found in previous models.

Overall, the teardowns didn't reveal any significant changes apart from the larger battery in the Apple Watch Ultra 2. It's possible that iFixit may discover unique features when they conduct teardowns of upcoming iPhone 15 models in the future.
