The news from Apple Watch Series 9 isn't too promising

It seems that Apple, being a major player in the smartwatch industry, isn't keen on making many changes in their new smartwatch model.

The news from Apple Watch Series 9 isn't too promising

The anticipated Apple Watch Series 9 is poised to receive a minor upgrade, centering primarily on the internal S-series chip's enhancements. These internal updates are expected to provide significant performance improvements. However, the exterior design and other features will remain similar to the Apple Watch Series 8.

The chips in the Apple Watch Series 6, 7, and 8, including the second-generation Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Ultra, are almost indistinguishable. They all come with 32GB storage and utilize dual-core CPUs labeled T8301. Notably, when the S6 chip was introduced in the Apple Watch Series 6, Apple mentioned that it allowed for a 20% faster app launch time.

Interestingly, the S6, S7, and S8 chips are derived from Apple's A13 Bionic chip, found in the iPhone 11 series, and are manufactured using TSMC's 7nm process. It wasn't until the A14 Bionic chip's debut in 2020 that Apple made a shift to TSMC's 5nm process.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has indicated that the upcoming S9 chip would be grounded on the A15 Bionic chip. This potentially means enhanced performance and efficiency, faster app launch times, and perhaps even improved battery longevity. Alongside the Apple Watch Series 9, this new chip will likely be the cornerstone of the upcoming second-generation Apple Watch Ultra.

Last year's Apple Watch Series 8 similarly saw minimal updates from the Series 7, only adding an enhanced gyroscope, accelerometer, Crash Detection, and a body temperature sensor. Given the focus on performance for both the Apple Watch Series 9 and the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra, the 2023 Apple Watch variants may also see comparably incremental upgrades. There are whispers that Apple might introduce a few fresh color variants this year, with pink being speculated for the Apple Watch Series 9 and black for the second-generation Apple Watch Ultra.
