NASA's pioneering Parker Solar Probe has achieved a significant milestone as it ventured closer to the Sun than any previous spacecraft. On June 22, the car-sized probe reached a remarkable proximity of just 5.3 million miles from the Sun's fiery surface, while hurtling through space at an astonishing speed of 364,610 miles per hour, as confirmed by NASA.

Parker Solar Probe: First spacecraft to Enter Sun's corona breaks new ground

Despite the blistering conditions, the Parker Solar Probe emerged unscathed from this close encounter, known as perihelion in astronomical terms, successfully completing its 16th orbit around the Sun. This achievement marks a remarkable advancement in our understanding of our closest star and provides invaluable insights into the mysteries of the solar system.

"Parker has already taught us so much, allowing us to investigate the source of the solar wind and discover more about the magnetic activity within the corona," Nour Raouafi, the project scientist of the Parker Solar Probe at the John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, expressed in a statement. "We're excited to see what else this mission has to show us as Parker gets even closer to an increasingly more active Sun." she added.

Successful completion of 16th science encounter by Parker Solar Probe

Launched on August 18, 2018, the Parker Solar Probe holds the distinction of being the inaugural spacecraft to venture into the Sun's corona, or upper atmosphere. Its primary objective is to provide scientists with an up-close examination of the Sun, aiding in the comprehension of its potential impact on life and technology on Earth.

Parker Solar Probe seeks 3.8 million miles for a new record

NASA has revealed that the probe is anticipated to come as close as 3.8 million miles to the Sun's surface, surpassing the orbits of Mercury and surpassing any previous spacecraft's proximity by more than sevenfold. The Parker Solar Probe made its historic contact with the Sun's corona in 2021.
