A recent patent application submitted by Apple to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office envisions a future MacBook with a trackpad entirely made of glass. The new design will bring a fresh look to MacBook devices. The patent renders leaked, giving us a good idea about what to expect from the devices. A touchpad-based, bezel-free, formable force input/tactile output interface made of metallic glass and composite materials is the subject of the patent. A protective cover made of glass or sapphire that covers the display's active display area can serve as the user interface surface.

appel macbookAccording to Apple's patent statement No. 17, the laptop will have a glass top with a trackpad area defined thereon. An example distribution of localized flexible regions defined into an electronic device's interior surface and associated with a force input/tactile output interface is shown in Patent Figure 2A.

By eliminating the traditional cutout area for a dedicated trackpad and spreading the force input/haptic output actuators across the entire width of the MacBook, the design of this future MacBook also aims to reduce the device's thickness. The 2023 laptop has a glass construction and a trackpad that is only visible when needed. When touched, lights under the glass reveal the trackpad's perimeter. This design is similar to the one LG demonstrated at CES. Notably, Apple is already working on a similar patent for a future glass laptop that could illuminate icons.
