Apple is reportedly developing an innovative new display, a potential successor to the existing Studio Display. The groundbreaking aspect of this display is its ability to operate without connection to a Mac PC, delivering useful features and possibly functioning as a Smart Display.
The source of this information is Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who shared significant details in his Power On newsletter. Gurman reports that Apple is designing a large-scale display powered by an A-series processor. Intriguingly, this upcoming product is expected to have its proprietary software that allows it to function even when disconnected from a Mac, essentially acting as an independent product that offers essential capabilities.

Interestingly, one of these capabilities could enable the display to function as a smart display. This feature might be similar to the StandBy mode in iOS 17, which enables Apple iOS 17 devices to show essential information such as date, time, weather, and more from the Smart Stack widgets collection while charging in landscape orientation. With this new standalone display, this feature might be accessible while it operates in low-power mode.
For reference, devices like the Amazon Echo or the Google Nest Hub already offer smart display functionality, allowing users to consume video content, make video calls, and more. Currently, Apple's 5K Studio Display, powered by the A13 Bionic chipset and featuring a 27-inch display, is its leading product in this category. This forthcoming display might act as its successor and offer expanded functionality, aligning with previous reports.
