Huawei is making a comeback with the launch of its Mate 60 series, which features the in-house HiSilicon Kirin 9000s chip. Alongside this, there's growing buzz about the company's next big project, the P70 series, anticipated for release in 2024.

Although details about the P70 series are still sparse, recent insights from a credible source have shed light on the camera technology expected in its most premium model. The P70 series, similar to the preceding Huawei P60 series, is likely to include three variants: the Huawei P70, Huawei P70 Pro, and Huawei P70 Art.

The highlight of the P70 series is the P70 Art model. Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that this top-end model will feature a 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor. This advanced sensor will be paired with a 1G6P glass-plastic hybrid lens, a notable upgrade in smartphone camera technology.

This type of lens, currently unique to the iPhone 15 Pro Max's tetraprism zoom camera, is known for its deformation resistance and superior optical performance. Two industry leaders, Largan and Sunny Optical, are at the forefront of manufacturing these lenses. The 1G6P lens for the P70 Art is estimated to cost around $12 at the prototype stage, with expectations of a reduced cost to $6-7 during mass production, assuming improved yield rates.

The introduction of the glass-plastic hybrid lens in Huawei's P70 series, following Apple's lead, signals a trend that other smartphone brands are likely to follow.

The Huawei P70 series, with its advanced camera system and other speculated features, is set for a launch in March 2024, closely followed by the releases of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra and Vivo X100 Ultra in April.
