Telegram reacts to claims of WhatsApp

WhatsApp and Telegram are strong virals for each other. Last year WhatsApp lost many users because of security but yet now the app has some concerns about Telegram's security. In response to allegations made concerning the security of the well-known messaging app by Wired and WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart, Telegram spokesperson Remi Vaughn contacted us. Vaughn claims that Cathcart was misled by the Wired piece since it has numerous inaccuracies and the editorial team disregarded Telegram's comments and responses.

Vaughn argues that Cathcart is mistaken when he claims that the End To End Encryption (E2EE) protocol used by Telegram has not been independently tested with regard to the secrecy of hidden talks. The MTProto 2.0 protocol used by Telegram to secure its chats has been confirmed by a team from the University of Udine in Italy. You can access their article here (PDF).

Keep in mind that this is a protocol verification rather than a specific implementation. However, the Telegram app uses reproducible builds and is open source as of version 5.13. Reproducible builds allow you to compile the publicly available source code and confirm that the machine code produced matches the machine code that is hosted on the Telegram website, Google Play Store, and Apple App Store.
