The nightmare of Twitter and the cryptocurrency world, the hacker, faced capture.

In a landmark case that unveils the obscure world of cybercrime, a British national known by the moniker “PlugwalkJoe” on the internet, real name Joseph James O’Connor, has received a five-year prison sentence. O’Connor, who was extradited from Spain, confessed to an array of cyber-related crimes, such as conspiring to hack computers, money laundering, and cyberstalking. These accusations emanated from two distinct cases, one revolving around a cryptocurrency theft plot and the other tied to significant cyber invasions and digital blackmail.

The criminal activities of O’Connor and his assoates were marked by a complex plan involving SIM swap attacks to pilfer cryptocurrency from a renowned cryptocurrency firm located in Manhattan. Utilizing SIM swaps, they obtained the mobile numbers of their victims, subsequently gaining unauthorized entry into their accounts. Successfully, O’Connor and his criminal team managed to steal cryptocurrency approximately worth $794,000, which has since surged in value to over $1.6 million. The pilfered funds were laundered through multiple transfers and exchanges, with some of the funds converted into Bitcoin and stashed in O’Connor’s personal cryptocurrency exchange account.

However, O’Connor's criminal escapades stretched beyond the theft of cryptocurrency. In a different case, he was part of a high-profile breach of Twitter accounts, wherein he and his accomplices manipulated social engineering techniques to access administrative tools unauthorizedly. This control of the targeted accounts was then transferred to unauthorized users, leading to a fraudulent scheme aimed at defrauding Twitter users. Moreover, O'Connor unauthorizedly accessed social media accounts of public figures on platforms like TikTok and Snapchat to acquire sensitive content and coerce the victims.

O’Connor's cybercrime behavior took a menacing turn when he started to stalk and intimidate an underage victim. He arranged several swatting attacks, a perilous form of harassment that involves phony emergency calls to the police, thereby endangering innocent lives and inciting widespread fear.

Joseph James O'Connor's conviction and sentencing serve as a potent reminder of the severe repercussions awaiting cybercriminals. His conduct underscores the pressing necessity for fortified cybersecurity protocols and heightened public consciousness about the threats presented by individuals who aim to misuse digital platforms for personal benefit. The triumphant prosecution of O'Connor came about through exceptional collaboration between law enforcement agencies, which included the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs.
