The social media giant WhatsApp has now started the countdown to be able to launch the new feature it has been working on for a while.

WhatsApp is nearing completion of its eagerly anticipated feature

WhatsApp, the renowned messaging app, is taking steps to enhance user privacy within its communities. Following a recent update to the communities tab interface, the company is now launching a new phone number privacy feature for community members.

This privacy feature, which has undergone quiet testing in recent months, is now being made available to an increasing number of users. Its main aim is to keep community members’ phone numbers hidden from fellow participants. Despite the list of participants already being hidden within the community announcement group, previously users could not react to messages without exposing their phone numbers. This new feature addresses this concern, allowing users to react to messages while keeping their phone numbers concealed.

When users access the community announcement group information, they will find a new option labeled “phone number privacy”. By activating this feature, users are informed that their phone numbers will only be visible to community administrators and those who have saved their numbers as contacts. This means that during conversations, other participants won't be able to see the complete phone numbers. However, it should be noted that this feature is only applicable to community members and the community administrator's phone number will still be visible.

The introduction of the phone number privacy feature is a significant step in improving user anonymity and privacy. Now, community members can interact within the community announcement group without revealing their full phone numbers, such as when reacting to a message. Although some users could previously react to messages within the community, this feature expands that capability. Additionally, WhatsApp intends to introduce this feature to other groups in the future. If a user wishes to contact a community member privately and the latter's number is hidden, they will have an option to send a request to share their phone number.

The phone number privacy feature is currently accessible to beta testers who have downloaded the latest WhatsApp update on Android and iOS devices, and will be progressively made available to more users. Alongside this, WhatsApp is actively developing other features such as a sticker suggestion, chat list filter, and high-quality video sharing, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to enhancing the user experience.
