Xiaomi's software strategy appears to be taking an unexpected turn as it plans to skip MIUI 15 and introduce a brand new operating system called MiOS, according to a reliable tipster, Digital Chat Station.

Farewell MIUI, hello MiOS

In a Weibo post, Digital Chat Station disclosed that Xiaomi is considering MIUI 14 as the "final major version" in the MIUI series. Instead, the company is focusing on the development of an entirely new operating system from the ground up.

Several months ago, the same tipster mentioned that Xiaomi was working on its own operating system compatible with the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), intended for use across various devices, including smartphones, tablets, and wearable technology. It's highly likely that this rumored OS is the one referred to as MiOS.

In the Weibo post, the tipster expressed hopes for Xiaomi's new system, stating that "MIUI 14's basic experience is already top-notch, but the dynamic effects are still lagging behind. I hope the new work can completely eliminate this shortcoming!" Additionally, it was clarified that MIUI 15 would not be rebranded as MiOS.

Interestingly, Xiaomi registered the domain name "mios.cn" in November 2022, indicating potential development of the new UI. However, at the moment, the website displays a 403 error and lacks an SSL certificate.

The exact timeline for the introduction of MiOS remains uncertain, but it's evident that Xiaomi is planning a significant shift in its software ecosystem, and more information is expected to emerge in due course. We'll keep you updated on any developments.
