Google Messages will now support animated emojis

Google, one of the world's biggest tech brands, continues to improve its Messages application and make it more attractive for users.

Google Messages will now support animated emojis

Google Messages, serving as the default messaging app on Android phones, is set to bring some vibrancy to daily communication with the introduction of animated emoji. This feature is designed to enliven text exchanges, building on the existing standard emoji support. Though there are a few usage constraints, the incorporation of animated emoji aims to make conversations more captivating.

First signs of animated emoji in Google Messages were initially noticed by Reddit user BruthaBeige, who shared his discovery on the Google Messages subreddit. Android expert Mishaal Rahman also reported on this graphic update, with another user confirming its presence. However, it's worth mentioning that the feature is currently undergoing a limited regional release and is not universally accessible.

At the moment, the animation feature is triggered when a single emoji is sent. If multiple emoji are sent or text is combined with an emoji, the animation does not activate. Despite this limitation, a vast array of emoji on users’ keyboards can be animated, broadening the expressive potential of text messages.

There are still some unknowns, such as the level of compatibility and specific roll-out plans. However, it's anticipated that Google will disclose more about animated emoji as they become accessible to all Google Messages users. It's worth noting that recent updates to the app have incorporated a new badge for RCS (Rich Communication Services) chats and extended direct reply functionality for the web version of Messages.
