The eagerly anticipated HarmonyOS 4 finally got unveiled

The Huawei Developer Conference 2023 is in session, and the most anticipated announcement so far has been the unveiling of HarmonyOS 4. This latest version of the operating system introduces a significant visual revamp, providing enhanced customization features for a range of devices including smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. With its growing influence, HarmonyOS now operates on more than 700 million devices globally, spanning diverse sectors from mobile phones to televisions and automobiles.

HarmonyOS 4 has reimagined the home screen experience. Users can now alter system fonts, colors, and even clock and widget designs, presenting numerous combinations for personalization. A fun addition is the option to set emoji-based wallpapers and home screens, allowing users to pick their favorite emojis as backgrounds.

The update doesn't stop at aesthetics. Huawei has refreshed its set of emojis, adding animated variants to the mix. Another innovative feature is the Panorama Weather, which permits users to display the daily weather forecast on their lock screens, updating in real-time as weather conditions change.

Notifications have become more intuitive. Users can now categorize incoming alerts based on their preferences and even pin notifications from their most-used apps. These notifications can be interacted with directly from the notification center, eliminating the need to launch the app.

One notable introduction is Live Window, reminiscent of Apple's Dynamic Island. This feature displays real-time notifications from supported apps in a pill-shaped icon, conveniently located at the corner of the user's device. A simple tap can expand this window, allowing users to interact seamlessly with the app. This feature promises to enhance the user experience across smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. Notably, both Huawei's native apps and a growing collection of third-party applications support this feature.

Huawei also introduces an expanded selection of widget options, which can be resized and placed on the home screen. Their innovative "super transfer station" facilitates a system-wide copy feature. Users can compile multiple files, texts, and images and effortlessly transfer them between apps and devices that support HarmonyOS.

In the automobile sector, the continuity features have seen an upgrade. Vehicles equipped with HarmonyOS infotainment systems can now seamlessly sync content and apps to their screens.

Technically, HarmonyOS 4 presents a revamped Ark Engine that promises a performance boost of 20%. This means quicker app launches and fluid animations, all while being more energy-efficient. On the security front, HarmonyOS 4 introduces enhanced permission tracking, app installation warnings, and tighter controls on access to personal data.

Starting today, Huawei offers the HarmonyOS 4 public beta to a spectrum of 34 devices, including the popular Mate50 and P60 series. The subsequent phase will see the inclusion of an additional 35 devices, such as the P40 and nova 10 series, among others.
