Reports indicate that Samsung is in the process of designing a sleek foldable laptop featuring a distinctive waterdrop hinge mechanism. Expected to launch in the latter part of next year, this design draws inspiration from Samsung's recent foldable smartphones, particularly the Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5, which introduced the Flex Hinge or the waterdrop design.

The novel waterdrop hinge permits the axis to shift when folded. This movement enables a closer fit between screens, thereby minimizing creasing at the fold. Though the mechanism has the potential to slim down the laptop, concerns regarding durability might result in a slightly thicker end product.

However, the real question arising in industry circles is the actual need for a waterdrop hinge in foldable laptops. Unlike smartphones, which are typically viewed up close, foldable laptops have distinct usage patterns. Given the laptops' weightier design, a more traditional U-shaped hinge might prove to be a better fit. Some experts argue that the advantages of integrating a waterdrop hinge into a laptop might not substantially benefit the user.

On a related note, while LG has already unveiled a foldable laptop named the Gram Fold, Samsung's decision to bide their time is seen as a tactical move due to the prevailing challenges in the IT industry. There's a consensus that Samsung's entry into the foldable laptop arena might not lead to significant market differentiation or profitability, especially considering their relatively modest standing in the laptop domain.

Potential suppliers for the laptop’s OLED panels are speculated to be either Samsung Display or BOE Technology Group. In a related development, rumors are abuzz about Apple's plans to launch a foldable MacBook, possibly by 2026.
