In May 2023, the release of Windows 11 build 23466 in the Dev Channel brought an announcement from Microsoft regarding a novel app designed for backing up settings, files, apps, and other computer data. While initially assumed to be exclusively for the imminent Windows 11 23H2 update, Microsoft clarified its intention to also extend this feature to Windows 10 users.

Recently, Microsoft unveiled the build 19045.3391 in the Release Preview Channel. Post-update, a new addition was noted: the Windows Backup app. This application, accessible via the Start menu, aids users in backing up their folders, applications, credentials, and settings directly to OneDrive.

However, a peculiar aspect of build 19045.3391 is its inability to restore from a OneDrive backup during the initial setup. This limitation has fueled speculation that Microsoft's goal might be to simplify the transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11 for users.

In addition to this, the 19045.3391 build introduces a series of other enhancements. The operating system's capability to accurately determine user location has been refined, benefitting features like weather updates, news, and traffic information, among others. This update also incorporates new account notifications, adjusts daylight saving time parameters for several countries, and offers various bug fixes.

Surprisingly, Microsoft's decision to introduce this backup feature to Windows 10 is unexpected but warmly received. With Windows 10 approaching its end of life in just two years, and Microsoft's indication of no major forthcoming updates, the tech giant's commitment to enhancing the user experience remains evident. This includes facilitating a seamless transition from devices running Windows 10 to those with Windows 11. This backup application initiative mirrors such efforts.
