A motion to accept 10,000 Uyghur refugees who fled but are now under pressure to return has been unanimously approved by the Canadian parliament. The vote on Wednesday builds on the Canadian lawmakers' decision in February 2021 to call Beijing's treatment of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in its northwestern Xinjiang territory genocide.
Rights groups believe that at least one million Uyghurs and other mostly Muslim minorities have been imprisoned in internment camps in the region. China is also accused of forcing women to conceive and forcing them to work as slaves. Mehmet Tohti, executive director of the Uyghur Rights Advocacy Project, said it was a message that “will resonate not only in China and in Canada but around the world”.
