These international travelers will depart at 10am on August 5th for a journey that organizers think will take around 5 days. For some, the journey can take much longer: In addition to the prize for the fastest, there are also extra prizes for the competitor who finishes with the lowest cost and visits the most countries. The main job of the Wigan-based company Lupine Travel, which organizes the race, is to send brave explorers to places not normally visited, such as Yemen and North Korea. The "grand prize" that the company will give to the first person to reach Istanbul is a travel balance of £2,000.

Competitors will need to register at a number of hidden checkpoints along the way. This will greatly limit the number of plans they can make up front. The first checkpoint is in Paris, but the rest will be announced one by one.
