The Paris prosecutor said on Friday that gunshots were fired in a central district of the French capital, resulting in the deaths of two people and the injuries of four others. The prosecutor also said that a 69-year-old suspect was taken into custody at the scene. 

"A gun attack has taken place. Thank you to the security forces for their swift action," the deputy of the city, Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire stated in a tweet. "Thoughts for the victims and those who witnessed this drama."

Prosecutor's office also stated that a 69-year old man has been arrested. 

The Agence France-Presse was informed by an eyewitness who claimed to be a local shopkeeper that they heard "seven or eight" shots at the time. 

French television channel BFM TV announced that two people were killed and many injured as a result of the gunfire in the Rue d'Enghien region.

No official statement has yet been made regarding the purpose of gunman attempting a mass shooting. The police took extensive security measures, the entrances and exits to the region were closed.

Paris police announced that they were investigating the attack on Rue d'Enghien and urged the public to stay away from the area.
