According to Vice a cat with tattoos served as the pet of a gang affiliated with the Sinaloa Cartel. After conducting a raid at Ciudad Juárez's state prison Cereso No. 3, authorities took possession of the cat, which looks to be of the Sphynx breed and bears the tattoo "Made in Mexico" on one of its sides. The prison gang "Los Mexicles" has a tattoo that serves as their emblem.

In order to fight the rival Juárez Cartel and its armed branch, Los Aztecas, Los Mexicles, an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel, was established in the border city in 2009. According to Chihuahua's state authorities, the gang has expanded to over 10,000 members since that time and has turned into one of the most vicious gangs in the state where Ciudad Juarez is located. 

According to a government press statement, the cat was discovered inside one of the cells belonged to a prominent Mexicles member. The animal was saved and given to the neighborhood animal shelter.
