Security concerns regarding TikTok, one of the world's most popular social media platforms, show no signs of abating globally.

New York City has recently imposed a ban on the use of the popular social media application, TikTok, on all city-owned devices due to rising security concerns. This decision came after a thorough evaluation by the city's cybersecurity department, which concluded that the app's use could jeopardize the security of their technological network. The immediate prohibition dictates that city employees are restricted from downloading, using, or accessing TikTok on any municipal devices.

A representative from the New York City government stressed the significance of using social media securely, acknowledging the persistent efforts of NYC Cyber Command in protecting its residents' data. This move is in line with the guidelines of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget that had earlier restricted the use of TikTok on federal devices. Recent federal laws also resonate with the city's position against the app.

Much of the apprehension is attributed to TikTok's ties with the Chinese tech colossus, ByteDance. There's growing anxiety that the app might be used as a tool for data harvesting that could potentially be utilized for surveillance. Moreover, ByteDance, the parent organization of TikTok, has landed in legal troubles due to allegations of collecting sensitive data like facial scans through another app called CapCut. These concerns have spurred several U.S. states to curtail or consider limiting TikTok's access on government devices. Interestingly, Montana took the initiative of implementing a statewide prohibition.

Internationally, nations such as Afghanistan, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, India, and New Zealand have either wholly or partially banned TikTok. In the Netherlands, officials are advised against its use, while Norway permits its civil servants to use the app on personal devices for work-related tasks.

The decision by New York City adds another layer to the ongoing discourse about the safety of TikTok and its association with Chinese tech firms. TikTok, for its part, continues to vouch for its commitment to safeguarding user privacy and security. However, its links with ByteDance and possible affiliations with the Chinese government have incited measures to reduce potential risks tied to its use, especially on government platforms.
