PlayStation 5 sales could outpace PlayStation 4 sales

In the world of PlayStation, the most popular gaming console brand, interesting developments are taking place. Here's the latest status in the competition between PS5 and PS4.

PlayStation 5 sales could outpace PlayStation 4 sales

Sony introduced the PlayStation 5 in November 2020 when the world was dealing with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chip shortages caused supply chain constraints, but these have gradually been resolved. The Japanese company recently announced the sales figures for its console since its debut. The PlayStation 5, available in both digital and disk versions, has become a hit.

Sony's PlayStation 5 was introduced as the successor to the PlayStation 4 in late 2020. Launching during the pandemic posed significant challenges in fulfilling the high demand, leaving many gaming enthusiasts struggling to secure their PS5. However, the situation has significantly improved over the past year.

Within just eight months of its official release, the PlayStation 5 became the fastest-selling PS console in the company's history, recording 10 million sales by July 2021. Sales crossed the 30 million mark in January of this year, only one and a half years after the initial sales record. This indicates that Sony managed to sell the additional 10 million units required to surpass the 40 million mark in just six months, from January 2023. This sales data encompasses both disc and digital editions of the PS5, and sales momentum continues to grow.

PlayStation 5 sales could outpace PlayStation 4 sales

The record for the best-selling console in the company's history is still held by the Sony PlayStation 2, with 159 million units sold over two decades. Sony's PS4 saw worldwide shipments of 117 million units, and it took the console six years to reach the 100 million mark. With 40 million units already sold in just three years, it's plausible that the current-generation PlayStation 5 will surpass this figure in less time.

Jim Ryan, the President of Sony Interactive, stated that the PlayStation 5 is now well-stocked, and Sony can finally satisfy the pent-up demand. This development has also undercut scalpers who had been purchasing the console and reselling it at inflated prices. Sony is running various promotions to further boost PS5 sales in different markets.
