China is running out of graves: They might use seas

China has found another way to deal with dead people's graves. Here are all the details.

China is running out of graves: They might use seas

Due to the crowded and expensive burial sites in China, there has been a significant increase in the number of people who want to bury their relatives in water. China has been having some problems due to over population and the country has taken some other steps for it.

The popularity of naval burials is seen as a natural consequence of China's rapid urbanization and aging population. It is stated that the prices of burial places in the city areas can reach up to 14 thousand 500 dollars, while the Shanghai authorities estimate that the burial places in the city will be completely exhausted within 15 years.

Due to these problems sea is another option.  Xiao Hu, who left the family business that made boat tours for tourists in March 2022 and founded a company that organizes sea funerals, said that he goes to sea two or three times a week during normal times, and provides up to 30 funeral services per month during peak times.

However, the demand for the ashes of former Chinese President Jiang Zemin, who died in December, to be scattered in the Yangtze River, tripled the funeral demands received by Xiao.

Sea burials are about 10 times cheaper than land burials, Xiao said. According to official figures, 10.41 million people died in 2022 in China. The ratio of the population over the age of 60 was calculated as 18.9 percent. This figure is expected to exceed the 30 percent threshold by 2035.
